Here is a piston from a car that came in belching white smoke from the exhaust and miss-firing (top). Carbon deposits caused by not having regular oil changes have seized the piston rings into the grooves. This, in turn, has caused oil to go where it shouldn’t be and cause all manner of running issues.
As a comparison here is a similar piston in better condition (bottom). Notice how all three piston rings are visible and protrude out at the sides.
This engine had to be stripped down, meticulously cleaned and rebuilt.
