What is a DPF?
A DPF or Diesel Particulate Filter is a filter that captures and stores exhaust soot in order to reduce emissions from diesel cars. The vehicles will regenerate themselves when certain conditions are met. By limiting a modern vehicle to short journeys at low speeds can cause a build up of soot in the DPF as it won’t have enough time to complete the required regeneration.
How does the DPF regeneration work?
The DPF needs to reach a high temperature in order to clear the soot that builds up. So your vehicle needs to be running at the correct temperature and be travelling at a constant speed for a period of time in order for it to be regenerated.
What happens if the DPF is unable to regenerate?
The soot that is generated will build up inside the filter, reducing the engines performance and inevitably your vehicle will end up going into limp mode or an engine management light will appear on your dashboard.
